What would happen if something bad went down?

Case Study: Select Music

Eighteen months ago, Stephen Wade – owner of Select Music – decided to switch the company’s insurance cover to Malton Road Advisory.

He made the decision after realising his existing broker failed to notify the company when a policy lapsed.

“They were sending emails to an employee who had left six months prior, leaving us temporarily without cover. I asked them, ‘What would have happened if something bad went down?’ I felt they should have had better processes in place,”

Stephen says, “After meeting with Malton Road, it was clear their approach to looking after insurance is very precise. James Fletcher (Malton Road’s Managing Director) had a good understanding of who we are as a music and touring business. He didn’t try to sell us policies we don’t need. He actually listened, and he understands my business across the board, which means I have a lot of faith in his decisions.”

Malton Road Advisory now handles all of Select Music’s insurance policies, as well as Stephen’s personal insurance.

Negotiating risks

When Select Touring announces a new music tour, large sums of money roll in as people flock to buy concert tickets. In the months that follow until the tour begins, anything can happen. The band might break up; a musician might be injured or become ill; or the entire tour might be delayed by an unpredictable world event.

“Having an insurance broker who understands those risks is integral,” says Stephen. “For me, it’s very much a personal relationship. The brokers at Malton Road cover all bases and angles that I may not have been thinking about.”

Select Music was caught without tour cancelation insurance once many years ago when an international artist was detained by Australian visa laws. Select Music had to reimburse everyone who had already purchased tickets, and money spent on marketing campaigns, flights, accommodation and merchandise was wasted. “The tricky thing about tour cancellation insurance is that it’s very expensive – sometimes you may be spending a large amount of money you may not need to. James helps us negotiate these decisions.”

Competitive premiums

Owned by Stephen Wade, Select Music is the largest independent music agency in Australia with its own international touring arm and over 100 artists on its books. It represents acclaimed Australian artists including RÜFÜS, Boy & Bear, Amy Shark and Passenger.

Eighteen months since Select Music first appointed Malton Road, Stephen and James retain a close partnership.

“Whenever we’ve given James new challenges, he had gone away, done his research, and returned with highly competitive premiums. He is a smart operator, a good listener and an intelligent person – that’s key, especially in insurance. You want to know the person you’re dealing with is dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s,” says Stephen.
